Generation of EXAFS oscillations through electron-wave interference cartoon

This cartoon shows the formation of EXAFS oscillations caused by a photoelectron ejected by an atom (left, blue) and its reflection of a neighbouring scattering atom (gold, right). Depending on the phase between the outgoing and scattered electron waves, the interference is positive or negative. The simulated EXAFS curve has been tuned so that maxima are observed whenever the two electron waves are in phase.
